Over the last decade, ketamine has had a resurgence. Originally, it was noticed that patients with complex regional pain syndrome who underwent surgery with ketamine anesthesia had considerable improvement in the state of this syndrome. This led researchers, including Robert Schwartzman, MD of Drexel University Medical School as well as researchers in Germany, to study the use of ketamine in cases of intractable complex regional pain syndrome. The results have been impressive, and as a result, the use of ketamine in various forms has proliferated in the United States.
